What Safe Mode is
Indian mains voltage is not steady. It sags when the whole colony switches on in the evening, and it spikes when a load somewhere drops off. Those swings are what actually kill air conditioner compressors, refrigerator motors and television power supplies — not lightning, and not age.
Safe Mode is the Beakn answer to that. Your energy meter or power module watches the supply voltage all the time. When the voltage goes outside the safe band, the Beakn cloud sends an OFF command to every enrolled Beakn smart switch and smart plug within seconds. The meter senses; the switches disconnect.
When the supply comes back to normal, you are notified and can switch your appliances back on.
The voltage band
Safe Mode acts when the supply goes:
•above 280 V, or
•below 200 V
Anything inside that band is treated as normal supply and nothing happens.
What is protected and what is not
This is the part worth understanding properly.
•Enrolled Beakn switches and plugs — these are disconnected automatically. This is real protection.
•Everything else — you get the alert on the app and on WhatsApp, but nothing is switched off for you. A fridge plugged straight into a wall socket is not protected.
To bring an ordinary appliance into Safe Mode, put it on a Beakn Smart Plug. The plug is then an enrolled device and gets the OFF command with everything else.
Whole-circuit cutoff
The 3-phase energy meters include a low-current relay output that can drive an external contactor, bought separately. Wired that way, a voltage event can cut an entire circuit at once — including appliances that are not smart at all. This is the option to use where you want blanket protection rather than device-by-device protection.
Real-life example: A flat in Lucknow loses voltage regulation one evening and the supply climbs past 280 V. The energy meter sees it. Within seconds the air conditioner, the refrigerator on its smart plug, and the television are all switched off, and a WhatsApp alert arrives. The neighbour's air conditioner, which was running on a plain socket, needs a new compressor.
